The local Jewish community marked the Trans Day of Remembrance on Nov. 20. JPride and the Jewish Community Relations Council, both programs of Milwaukee Jewish Federation, partnered to commemorate the solemn day. Nate Looney, director of community safety & belonging, Jewish Federations of North America, was the keynote at two programs. He is a Jewish Afro-Latino transgender man whose story reflects the power of community and intersectionality, according to the JCRC. The first program was a luncheon catered by Kinship Café, held at Thrive Collaboration, 2153 N. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Dr., Milwaukee; members of the Jewish community and JCRC alliances were invited to participate. The second program was co-sponsored by Congregation Shalom and open to the community at large. Looney said: “The message is clear: LGBTQ+ Jews are ready to lead, ready to participate in Jewish communal life, and ready to invest in their communities. What they need now are spaces, programs, and mentorship structures that recognize them fully, honor their identities, and support their growth.”
