Nurse seeks kidney donor

A longtime Wisconsin nurse, Ardis Horwich, is urgently seeking a living kidney donor.

Horwich, 57, of Pewaukee, has been living with juvenile diabetes since age nine. After nearly 50 years of managing the disease, her kidneys began to fail last year. She has been on dialysis since April 2024 and was recently added to transplant lists.

“You can do dialysis indefinitely, but it’s not a healthy way to live,” said Horwich, who has been an active member of Congregation Emanu-El of Waukesha. “My biggest motivation for a transplant is my daughters. I want to be here for them.”

Horwich, a registered nurse, stepped away from that work due to the physical toll of dialysis. Her two daughters, 13 and 22 and both adopted from China, are her driving force. “I want to do whatever I can to stay around,” she said.

A living donor is her best chance of survival, but Horwich’s family members are not eligible to donate. For more information, call 608-263-1384 or fill out a form at UWhealth.org/can-i-be-a-donor.

“I’ve always been the one helping others,” Horwich said. “Now I’m hoping someone out there might be willing to help me.”
