We asked children at Congregation Beth Israel Ner Tamid in Glendale what they like most about Passover and we got back such wonderful responses! We couldn’t use them all, but here’s a fabulous sampling.
From family to food, Pesach is a special time for these local fifth and sixth grade kids.
My favorite part of Passover is eating food. I like the chocolate covered matzo. I usually go to my grandma’s house where we have our Seder. My whole family is there. The Seder is too long but I like the part where we find the afikoman. I love matzo pizza. I also like matzo brei.
I also like being with my cousins. They are from Minnesota and we get to see them when we go to my grandma’s. They are younger so I don’t have to do the four questions any longer. My favorite part of the Seder is when we dip cucumbers in saltwater. That is our family tradition in addition to parsley.
My favorite things about Passover are the traditions that go into it. I especially like finding the afikoman because my family is super competitive during the Seder. I also like inviting my family over from all over the U.S. like my aunts and uncles or my cousins from up north. I also like eating all the matzo I want during Passover like matzo pizza or matzo which is chocolate covered, caramel covered matzo which makes us ssssssssooooooo hyper. Or the matzo brei that my grandma makes and is so good! I also love just celebrating a Jewish holiday with family.
My favorite part of Passover is those candy fruit slices that everyone loves. I also like matzo, chocolate covered matzo, buttered matzo, matzo ball soup and the herbs dipped in salt water. I also like the grape juice. We have a Seder, usually at my cousin’s place. We divide the group into two tables. One table is the children’s table and the other is grownups. We try to keep the Seder as short as possible. I get to say the four questions. When we have the Seder hosted at my house we get to search for the afikoman. If I find it, I get money! At my Seder is usually my zaide, my bubbe, my little cousins and my aunts and uncles. My zaidereads the story of Passover from our Haggadah. We eat the leftover food for breakfast.

For a Passover Seder, we switch off going to my great uncle’s house or my uncle’s house. We all take turns reading the Haggadah and I have to say the four questions. We have the traditional Seder, but we can have some fun with it too. We eat some normal food too (kosher for Passover though). People all bring different food items and desserts. We eat those and then we find the afikoman. If we find it we get money.
I was born on Passover, so sometimes my birthday falls on Passover. We have to make my cake out of matzo meal. It’s not completely terrible, but normal cake is better.
My favorite part of Passover is making my friends feel jealous that I get to bring special food to school for lunch.
