The annual Milwaukee area Jewish school enrollment census of the Coalition for Jewish Learning, released in February, found a slight decline in numbers of Jewish students since last year.
This year, 1,717 students are enrolled in Jewish education programs, compared to 1,739 last year. “While this is a moderate decrease, it does represent the continuation of a downward trend of the last 15 years,” CJL Executive Director Steven Baruch, Ph.D., wrote in a release.
The biggest decline was in religious school attendance, going from 713 to 669. Day school totals grew slightly, 627 from 624; and preschool totals increased the most, 402 to 421.
The release noted that Hillel High School in its second year of operation grew from 19 to 31 students, “and this increase was important in keeping day school enrollment from declining.”
CJL is the education program of the Milwaukee Jewish Federation.
