Milwaukee native Lawrence Kane died April 18, 2009. He was 83.
Born March 11, 1926, he graduated from North Division High School in 1944. The eldest of seven children, he attended University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee for one semester but left school so that he could work to support his family.
He worked in the sales division of Tri-State Home Improvement in Milwaukee for more than 50 years, canvassing right up until his death.
He was passionate about music of all kinds — jazz, big band, classical, swing and played throughout his life, including his own show, “Larry Kane, His Trumpet and the Sophisticated Swing.” He was a bugler in the U.S. Navy during his World War II stint in Shanghai and later played trumpet in the volunteer Shrine Band.
He was a lifetime member of the Milwaukee Musicians Union and the Milwaukee Harmony Masonic Lodge #261.
He was a member of Congregation Beth Jehudah.
At the funeral, Rabbi Michel Twerski said, “Meeting Larry was like falling into his smile.”
“My father was the kindest, gentlest and most sincere man,” said his daughter Anita (Ric) Domnitz of Whitefish Bay, “Honestly, everyone who knew him loved him.”
In addition to his daughter, he is survived by wife Shirley (Nee Gottlieb) of Glendale; daughter Barbara Jo (Jon) Stokes of Hermosa Beach, Calif.; sisters Bernice Moser of Cincinnati, Ruth Kane and Helen (Kenneth) Gunderson of Las Vegas; brothers Donald Kane of Long Beach, Calif., Harold Kane of Milwaukee and Irving Kane of Las Vegas; three grandchildren and one great-grandson.
