Funeral services were held Aug. 7 for Ruth Ann Bernstein (nee Dinnerstein) of Mequon. She died Aug. 5 at the age of 83.
She was born in Milwaukee and graduated from West Division High School in 1937.
She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in teaching in 1941 from the old Milwaukee State Teachers College, the forerunner of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
She served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army during World War II. Professionally, she was a real estate developer with Northland Development.
A founding member of Congregation Shalom, she was a past president of its Sisterhood. In addition, she belonged to Hadassah, NA’AMAT USA, Women’s American ORT, Milwaukee Athletic Club and North Shore Country Club.
Her special interests included playing bridge and mah jong, the performing arts, reading, traveling and enjoying the company of friends and family.
She is survived by daughters Sue Ann (Richard) Weller of Bayside and Janet (Byron) Frenz of Madison; sister Florence (Jay) Irving of Long Branch, N.J.; special friend Harry Samson of Milwaukee; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Her husband, Martin Bernstein, died in 1997.
Rabbi Ronald Shapiro officiated at the funeral. Burial was at Second Home Cemetery.
Memorials to Congregation Shalom or the American Heart Association would be appreciated by the family.
