Madisonian Blanche Altshuler died April 21 at the age of 89.
She was born in Philadelphia and graduated from the Oberlin College Conservatory in 1935 with a degree in music. She continued her studies at Trinity College of Music in London in 1938 and received her master’s degree from Teachers College of Columbia University in 1951.
She taught at several schools of music and universities, including the University of Wisconsin Extension and Edgewood College in Madison. She was the author of four books of poetry and a frequent guest on Wisconsin Public Radio. In recent years, she pursued a new interest as a painter with an art therapist at the Oakwood Retirement Center.
She is survived by daughters Jean Altshuler of Keswick, England, and Anne (David Sulman) Altshuler of Madison; and three grandsons.
Funeral services were held April 29 in Madison.
