BAYONNE, N.J. — Manischewitz announced a partnership with the U.S. Department of Education to introduce gefilte fish as a weekly menu item in public-school cafeterias nationwide. Beginning last month, the product will be served on Fridays in schools participating in federal meal programs.
The initiative, called “Fishy Fridays: Tradition in Every Bite,” aligns with updated federal nutrition guidelines emphasizing protein-rich, lower-fat foods. Manischewitz said its gefilte fish, made from whitefish, pike and carp, meets those standards and offers omega‑3 fatty acids, potassium and calcium.
Company officials said the program aims to expand student exposure to nutrient-dense foods while introducing a traditional Jewish staple to a broader audience, according to a news release. A Department of Education spokesperson said the offering meets operational needs because it is shelf-stable and complies with federal lunch requirements.
Manischewitz has produced kosher packaged foods for more than 130 years and is based in Bayonne, New Jersey.
