Election Day is April 7

Elections for Wisconsin’s newest Supreme Court justice are set for April 7, 2026.

The race is between left-leaning Dane County Judge Chris Taylor and the more conservative Waukesha County Judge Maria Lazar. Neither candidate is part of the Jewish community. Both are appeals court judges.

Lazar advocates for religious freedom. “Our courts are to respect, not denigrate, religions and all Wisconsinites’ freedom to celebrate as they believe,” states her website. Lazar said: “The job of a judge, and especially the Wisconsin Supreme Court, is not to … advance political goals. The court’s duty is to interpret the law, not make it.”

Taylor is driven to combat issues such as domestic violence, sexual assault, the cost of healthcare, and unfair wages, according to her campaign website. “I’ve spent my career standing up for Wisconsin families, for abortion rights, and domestic violence survivors,” she said in a statement.

Prior races have attracted national attention when the left-right balance was at stake on the court. That’s not seen as the case this year, even though the court currently leans to the left by just one vote. The race is for a seat held by a conservative who is not seeking reelection, so it is expected only to determine if liberals expand their majority to 5-2 or if conservatives maintain a 4-3 minority.
