A coalition of Democratic Party of Wisconsin caucuses issued a joint statement condemning the deadly antisemitic attack in Sydney, Australia, and expressing solidarity with Jewish communities in Wisconsin and around the world.
The statement said that during a Hanukkah celebration in Sydney, “two gunmen opened fire on a gathering of the Jewish Community and murdered 15 people, injuring 40 more.”
The joint statement was released under the banner of multiple Democratic caucuses, including the Jewish Caucus, Muslim Caucus, LGBTQ+ Caucus, Black Caucus, Women’s Caucus, Labor Caucus, American Indian Caucus, Asian and Pacific Islander Caucus, Environmental Caucus, Rural Caucus and Veterans Caucus.
“We hold collectively with our Jewish communities everywhere and our Wisconsin Jewish Caucus members in condemning this violence and resolutely support the right of all to worship in safety and dignity,” the statement said.
The caucuses also emphasized unity across communities, writing, “Today we affirm our condemnation of violence everywhere and stand arm-in-arm with our Jewish brothers and sisters across the world.”
The statement was signed by caucus leaders, including Ann Jacobs and Dustin Klein, co-chairs of the Jewish Caucus; Awais Khaleel, chair of the Muslim Caucus; Brady Coulthard, chair of the LGBTQ+ Caucus; Nick Truog, chair of the Black Caucus; Dottie LeClair, chair of the Women’s Caucus; and Cristhbel Martinez, chair, Latino Caucus.
Other signatories included Arvina Martin of the American Indian Caucus; Anthony Dare of the Asian and Pacific Islander Caucus; Melanie Bartholf of the Labor Caucus; Vik Verma of the Environmental Caucus; Gary Hawley of the Veterans Caucus; and Gloria Hockstein of the Rural Caucus.
“As the Jewish communities in the United States prepare to light their candles, we know they do so with broken hearts and in defiance of hate,” the Dec. 16 statement said.
