Milwaukee’s Holy Redeemer Institutional Church of God in Christ, led by Dr. Valerie Daniels and Pastor Jeremy Q. Henry, hosted a blood drive in collaboration with American Friends of Magen David Adom and Blood Centers of America.
On June 25, local members of Holy Redeemer Institutional Church of God in Christ, a predominantly African American church, came together in a shared mission to save lives both locally and globally. Even though the blood collected will serve hospitals in the Milwaukee area, a contingency agreement with Blood Centers of America will allow for it to be sent to Israel if their blood supply becomes depleted, according to a news release.
The initiative builds on an interfaith movement launched in Chicago in a collaboration between Rabbi Michael Siegel and Pastor Chris Harris. They worked together to address trauma in their communities by implementing a model of a trauma-response training program from Israel for Chicago’s South Side. This sparked the expansion of blood drives outside Chicago, with Holy Redeemer Church of God in Christ being first to participate.
Magen David Adom is Israel’s national emergency medical, disaster, ambulance and blood bank service. It’s a member of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.
