Scammers are impersonating deputies

The Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about ongoing phone scams involving callers who falsely claim to be sheriff’s deputies.

Scammers are contacting individuals and threatening arrest for missed jury duty, outstanding warrants or unpaid fines unless immediate payment is made using pre-paid credit or gift cards. In some cases, the caller claims to be an investigator from another state and threatens to send deputies to arrest the victim if payment is not made.

The Sheriff’s Office emphasizes that it does not call residents to demand payment or threaten arrest. Officials urge the public to hang up immediately if they receive such a call and to never provide personal information, including Social Security numbers or credit card details.

Anyone who receives a suspicious call is encouraged to report it to the Sheriff’s Office at Sheriff@milwaukeecountywi.gov or call 414-278-4700.
