Legendary philanthropic business leaders honored with inaugural Herb Kohl Service Award

MILWAUKEE — Three of Milwaukee’s most distinguished philanthropic business leaders were honored with the inaugural Herb Kohl Service Award during the Milwaukee Jewish Federation’s Economic Forum on Wednesday, June 11, at The Pfister Hotel.

Sheldon Lubar, Stephen Marcus, and Allan “Bud” Selig received the award, which recognizes individuals who exemplify the values of hard work, leadership, and community service. The award is named in honor of Herb Kohl, obm, one of Wisconsin’s most respected leaders, and celebrates his legacy of service and philanthropy.

The honorees, who were friends with the late senator from a young age, were recognized during the luncheon portion of the event. Their contributions to the Milwaukee community reflect a commitment to giving back and fostering positive change.

Lubar, founder and chairman of Lubar & Company, is a prominent business leader and philanthropist whose efforts have supported numerous civic and cultural initiatives in Milwaukee. Marcus, chairman of The Marcus Corporation, has been instrumental in shaping the city’s hospitality and entertainment industries while championing community development. Selig, former commissioner of Major League Baseball, has left a lasting legacy in sports and civic engagement, advocating for Milwaukee’s growth and well-being

The Economic Forum, now in its twelfth year, attracted over 500 business and community leaders from the Milwaukee area. The event featured a keynote speech by Yancey Strickler, co-founder and former CEO of Kickstarter, who discussed the importance of value beyond the bottom line.

The event was co-chaired by Linda Gorens-Levey, partner at General Capital Group; David Lubar, CEO and president of Lubar & Company; and Greg Marcus, CEO and president of The Marcus Corporation.

The forum, organized by the Milwaukee Jewish Federation, seeks to address critical economic issues impacting the city and region while promoting community well-being. Sponsors of the 2025 event included Herb Kohl Philanthropies, BMO, Brewers Community Foundation, Northwestern Mutual, Phoenix Investors, Sid Grinker Restoration, Wintrust, and more than 50 other organizations.
