Organizations are representing the Jewish community at the Milwaukee Pride Parade on June 8

Several Jewish organizations are raising their flags in support of LGBTQ+ pride at this year’s Milwaukee Pride Parade. Together, they will walk with J-Pride to show dedication to creating a welcoming Jewish community where people can be themselves.

“These gatherings are about celebrating openness and love and support and friendship in the community,” said J-Pride committee member Reva Fox. “It’s so much easier for young people to come out if they know the community around them is welcoming.”

J-Pride is an outreach and inclusion initiative of Milwaukee Jewish Federation dedicated to bringing together LGBTQ+ Jewish individuals and allies to build a supportive community.

Participating organizations so far include NextGen MKE, the Jewish Community Relations Council, The Jewish Community Center, Milwaukee Jewish Free Loan Association, Own Your Judaism, Congregation Shalom, Congregation Emanu-El B’ne Jeshurun, Jewish Museum Milwaukee, Hillel Milwaukee, Congregation Sinai, Holocaust Education Resource Center, and Jewish Family Services.

J-Pride encourages all participating organizations to decorate a wagon and hand out candy during the parade. Custom buttons and small Jewish pride flags will also be distributed by J-Pride to spread visibility and show support for LGBTQ+ inclusion in Jewish spaces.

“I just want people to know that this is our stance as a Milwaukee Jewish community,” said Nicole Gorelik, Engagement Associate for NextGen, an engagement program within the Milwaukee Jewish Federation.

J-Pride also designed an official T-shirt for participants to wear while marching, with a space on the back to write their organization’s name. Marchers aren’t required to wear the official t-shirt, but those affiliated with an organization are encouraged to wear a shirt or swag representing it.

To ensure safety, J-Pride will have a security officer walking alongside participants during the parade.

Those interested in walking with J-Pride must register beforehand. Individuals do not need to be affiliated with an organization to participate.

The RSVP link to walk with J-Pride is at MilwaukeeJewish.org/JPride.
