Rabbi Jill Avrin, Milwaukee native, builds Jewish community in Minnesota

Milwaukee native Rabbi Jill Avrin founded the nonprofit organization “YourJewish” to provide people who may not be engaged in Jewish life accessible opportunities within the Twin Cities Jewish community.

YourJewish brings together people in the Twin Cities area looking to foster a sense of community and deepen their personal connections to Judaism through a range of events, trips and small groups in more secular spaces.

Growing up in an unaffiliated and interfaith family, Avrin’s first “formal” introduction into the Jewish community was through BBYO in Wisconsin.

“That became my Jewish community,” Avrin said. “It became my whole life, really.”

Still, Avrin recognized an absence of people who are proud to be Jewish, but are connected to Judaism through more of a cultural lens than a religious one.

Avrin founded YourJewish in July 2023 with the goal of providing more alternative opportunities for Jews to connect and grow their Jewish identities in more independent, creative ways.

Now, YourJewish is offering a different kind of learning opportunity: a trip to Buenos Aires. The itinerary includes sites highlighting the city Jewish heritage and history, like Templo Libertad, the Buenos Aires Jewish Museum and the Holocaust Museum.

Your Jewish is offering the trip to Buenos Aires from Oct. 28 to Nov. 4, 2025.

Richard Meyers, a Milwaukee native and Avrin’s uncle, came up with the idea for the trip when visiting Buenos Aires and seeing how outwardly many Argentinians express their Judaism.

According to the YourJewish website, the trip offers a chance to create connections with fellow Jews internationally.
