The Coalition for Jewish Learning and Israel Center organized a multi-synagogue, intergenerational field trip to Chai Point to create a “Wings of Hope” art piece, which will be displayed during a Yom HaZikaron ceremony on April 27.
Residents of Chai Point and 50 students in 2nd through 5th grade from five Milwaukee synagogues joined together on Feb. 9 to build colorful wings out of old toys collected by the community. Students explored recycling, tree care, and teamwork while working on the project, according to Nicole Boico, assistant director for the Coalition for Jewish Learning of Milwaukee Jewish Federation.
The art project is inspired by and shares the same design as the original “Wings of Hope” art piece, created in July 2023 by Livnat Kutz and displayed on the wall of a shelter in Kibbutz Kfar Aza in southern Israel. Kutz’s creation symbolized values of sustainability, creativity, and community, according to the Livnat’s Wings website.
During the Oct. 7, 2023 attack, Kutz and her family were murdered in their home. The newer “Wings of Hope” project serves as a reminder of Livnat’s legacy and seeks to inspire creativity and remembrance in others.
“This is just one of the many stories that we will be honoring at our Yom HaZikaron ceremony next month,” Boico said.
