The Rubenstein Family Kosher Oasis Café is open, offering a wide range of Jewish foods as one of the few Kosher restaurants in Milwaukee. The restaurant had closed during the pandemic and struggled with resulting staffing shortages.
The Café, located at Ovation Communities, a senior living facility on Prospect Avenue, is open to the public for lunch from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Sunday through Friday.
“I sincerely believe that this Café offers all Jewish people a place where they feel welcome and call it their own hometown place to enjoy the company of each other while enjoying a great kosher meal,” said Michael Aparo, the director of food services at Ovation Communities.
The Oasis Café is Cholov Yisrael Kosher Certified by the Wisconsin K. It follows the highest kosher certification standards in the metropolitan area.
Oasis Café offers a new menu that features appetizers like breaded portabella mushrooms and French fries, along with Jewish favorites such as potato knish. Main entrées include an array of sandwiches along with latkes and blintzes. Diners can also enjoy a salad bar with fresh ingredients and ice cream desserts.
“I am partial to the Cheese Frenchie. This is a cheese sandwich with the crust cut off, cut corner to corner, lightly dressed with mayo, and then dipped in a batter and rolled in crushed cornflakes,” Aparo said. “It is then deep fried to a golden brown and served three triangles to an order. This is a must try if you come to the Oasis for lunch.”
Another staff favorite is the fried kreplach lox and cream cheese.
“Instead of your traditional beef fried kreplach, we take smoked salmon and mix it with cream cheese and green onion, fold it in a wonton wrapper and then deep fry it. Delicious,” he said.
New items will be added to the menu as the season changes or when staff comes up with a new lunch offering. In addition to the food, the cafe updated equipment in the kitchen and trained new staff, emphasizing customer service.
“We want to develop a place where anyone in the community can come in and enjoy a satisfying meal with their family or friends and hopefully become a small hub of the kosher community,” Aparo said.
