Maxine Dee Cohn

Maxine Dee Cohn (nee Shovers) passed away on Nov. 20, 2023, at the age of 86.

Maxine was a smart-as-a-whip, take-charge force to be reckoned with. She opened her own business, The Mail Stop in 1984 and ran it for 11 years — something she took great pride in as she expertly wrapped and shipped packages for her customers.

A “do-er” for as long as she was physically able, Maxine excelled at playing golf and tennis, passing along her love of the latter to her children and grandchildren. Maxine was a Bridge Master who frequented statewide tournaments with her beloved husband, Ronnie, who passed away in 2022. Together, Ronnie and Maxine shared their joy of playing cards and other games with their children and grandchildren — from Seven-Up to Secret to Rummikub and Foo — and there was often a complicated jigsaw puzzle in progress on their family room game table.

Family came above all else in Maxine’s heart. Known to practically everyone as “Gaga,” she was a fierce defender and champion of her grandchildren especially, and nothing brought her more joy than to spend time with her brood — whether in her home or in her favorite getaway spot, Door County. Family time meant cooking and baking with and for her family, and she was the host for decades of holidays and special occasions. Family favorites included banana chocolate chip muffins, lazy daisy cake, chocolate cake, homemade hot fudge, plus plum kuchen for Rosh Hashanah, latkes for Hanukkah and mandelbrot for Passover.

Maxine leaves behind her grateful family, who will carry on her legacy. Cherished mother of Scott Cohn, Barrie (Bob) Merar and BJ (Elyse) Cohn. Loving Gaga of Alexandra Cohn, JP (Karli) Cohn, Jonathan (Alea) Cohn, Dani Merar, Mardee (Adam) Nelson, Benjamin Cohn, Ariel Cohn and dear great-grandmother of Arianna Diaz and Liam Nelson. Fond sister-in-law of Sari (Ken) Miller. Preceded in death by her beloved husband, Ronald Cohn. Further survived by other loving relatives and dear friends.

He taught Jewish dancing (and met his wife-to-be at a dance class). He wrote essays about many topics just for his own satisfaction. He was an excellent photographer and created a large collection of family pictures and interesting, beautiful scenes.

Above all, Allen was a truly wonderful husband and father.

Helaine Tolkan Weil

Helaine Tolkan Weil died from Alzheimer’s Disease on Nov. 25, 2023, in Rancho Mirage, California.

Lainie was born in Milwaukee on January 11, 1941, to Monya and Phil Tolkan. She was the eldest daughter, followed by Susie Tolkan London (obm) and Kathy Tolkan Worly. Lainie attended Whitefish Bay High School and the University of Wisconsin – Madison, graduating in 1962.

Lainie married the love of her life, Tom Weil, on June 29, 1963, and enjoyed a 60-year marriage.  Their children, Liz Weil Bornstein (Alan obm), Robert Weil (Ilene) and Richard Weil (Dara), remember her as a devoted mother, lifelong volunteer and fabulous cook and baker. Lainie was always the class mom for all three kids and was President of the School Boards at Indian Hill School and Maple Dale.  She was also active on the Nicolet High School Board. As a former teacher, Lainie was a valued advocate and volunteer. She was a creative and successful fundraiser as President of the Mount Sinai Hospital Auxiliary Board in Milwaukee, and later, President of Philanthropy at Loma Linda University Hospital.  After moving to Palm Springs as a full-time resident, she became President of Philanthropy for the Jewish Federation of the Desert. Lainie always found a way to give back.  For her birthdays, in lieu of gifts, she would also ask friends to give children’s clothing and socks for donation to the pediatric trauma center at Loma Linda University Hospital.  She also led an annual Passover food drive for those in need in the Palm Springs area.

Her friends and family remember Lainie for her chocolate chip cookies and matzo ball soup deliveries.  Taking care of people mattered to Lainie.  Every time a friend had a grandchild, the family received a handmade quilt with the baby’s name on it.  She led her kids by example and truly lived by the adage that it feels good to do good. Lainie was a shining example of selflessness and generosity.  She was pure sunshine.

Lainie’s love was so very special. She was good to the core, cared for everyone and always had something sweet to say about others.  Her legacy of generosity and kindness will live on through her children and grandchildren. Lainie was a blessing in our lives, and we are all better for it.

She will be dearly missed by her loving husband, Tom; children, Liz, Rob and Rick; and her seven grandchildren: Talia Bornstein, Jackson Weil, Kate Bornstein, Lexi Weil, Jenna Weil, Ryan Weil and Jake Weil. Her sister, Kathy (Jay) Worly, brother-in-law, Gary London (Susie, obm), and cousins, June (David obm) Wallace and Suzy (Alan obm) Ettinger mourn her loss.

Private Burial took place at Greenwood Cemetery. A memorial service was held on December 1 at The Wisconsin Club, Milwaukee. Rabbi Ron Shapiro officiated.  Goodman-Bensman Whitefish Bay Funeral Home assisted the family.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Lainie’s memory may be made to Jewish National Fund or FIDF (Friends of the Israeli Defense Forces).
