Salute to Jewish Educators to honor Schneidman, Spalter, Bernier, Carp and others 

 

The 2022 Salute to Jewish Educators awards will be held at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, March 6 as an event for both in-person and virtual attendees. 

The awards celebration is an annual recognition of educators sponsored by Milwaukee Jewish Federation’s Coalition for Jewish Learning. 

The honorees include: 

  • Lifetime Impact Award – Doris Shneidman (founding director of Milwaukee Jewish Day School) 
  • Levy Family Jewish Educator of the Year – Rivkie Spalter (Mequon Jewish Preschool) 
  • Jerry Benjamin Inspiration Award for Informal Education – Dalilah Bernier (Hillel Milwaukee) 
  • Gill Incentive for Teachers Award – Roger Carp (Congregation Shalom) 
  • Chai Award – Tova Koren (Jewish Beginnings) and Rabbi Sholom Ber Munitz (Bader Hillel Academy) 

Thirty-six teachers and support persons at 16 Jewish learning institutions will receive Teacher Impact and School Support Awards. 

“The Salute to Jewish Educators is a unique event in that it brings together a total cross section of our community  – preschools, day schools, synagogue schools, Westside, Eastside, Northshore, Reform, Conservative, Orthodox and Reconstructionist – for the positive purpose of celebrating all our teachers,” said Tziporah Altman-Shafer, Jewish Education Community Planner. 

“By recognizing each teacher and each school, we proclaim loudly that our teachers are a treasure and we appreciate everything they do for our children and our community,” Altman-Shafer added. “It is a blessing to be able to bring the community together each year for this event, whether in person, online or hybrid.” 

Doris Schneidman is the founding director and first principal of Milwaukee Jewish Day School. During her years there, she had a gift for selecting excellent teachers and took pride in the professional development of the staff. She also created an environment where children see Judaism as an integral part of their daily lives. 

Rivkie Spalter has a commitment and passion that drives Mequon Jewish Preschool. She started an alumni group and created a seamless relationship between Chabad’s vision and constructive pedagogical practice. 

Dalilah Bernier is the Springboard Fellow and Ezra Jewish Education Specialist at Hillel Milwaukee. She has a passion for working with others in leadership, Jewish education, programming and community outreach. 

Roger Carp has been teaching in the religious school at Congregation Shalom since 1993. Along the way, he earned a master’s degree in Judaic studies from Spertus Institute in Chicago. He has made art projects, drama, music and yoga significant elements in his teaching of Jewish holidays, life-cycle events, Jewish ethics and rituals and Torah.  

The event will feature a tribute video to the winners and speeches. For educators only, the live event will be held at Harry and Rose Samson Family Jewish Community Daniel M. Soref Community Hall, 6255 N. Santa Monica Blvd. COVID safety protocol requirements will be in place. Families and community supporters of the Jewish school educators are invited to watch via Zoom.
