Donna Altman
Donna Altman of Las Vegas died Dec. 1, 2019. She was 81.
Born in Milwaukee on June 16, 1938, she was a 1956 Whitefish Bay High School graduate. She earned her bachelor’s degree in education in 1960.
Donna was a member of Congregation Shalom for many years while living in Milwaukee, then Bet Knesset Bamidbar, Las Vegas.
Organizations included Mount Sinai Hospital Women’s auxiliary, Shalom Sisterhood and Jewish Friendship Club, Las Vegas. She served as a teacher, interior decorator and a stenographer for her husband’s surgery practice. Donna enjoyed time with family, needlepoint and playing canasta.
A brave warrior, Donna was a married mother of two young children, living alone, when husband David served in a MASH hospital in Vietnam in 1967 and 1968. They moved to Las Vegas in 2004 and immediately got involved in Sun City clubs.
Donna is survived by her husband of 60 years, Dr. David Altman; children Terri (Steve) Staley of Seattle, Tziporah (Joel) Altman-Shafer of Fox Point; Scott (Laura) Altman of Los Angeles; grandchildren Ben and Casey Altman, and Shoshi, Yoni and Golan Altman-Shafer.
Burial was at Second Home Cemetery Dec. 3, 2019 with Rabbi Avremi Schapiro and Blane Goodman Funeral Service. Memorials are welcome to the American Cancer Society or a Jewish organization of your choice.
Barbara G. Bassewitz
Barbara G. Bassewitz of Naples, Florida, died Nov. 18, 2019. She was 86.
Born in Detroit on Sept. 16, 1933.
In college, she earned a bachelor of arts in English, with a Phi Beta Kappa designation. She graduated from the University of Michigan in 1955, after graduating from Baldwin High School in 1951.
Barbara served as a volunteer trustee at synagogue. She was a member of Congregation Beth El, Sheboygan and Temple Shalom, Naples, Florida. She was part of Hadassah and B’nai Brith Women.
Her dual professions were actress and homemaker. Special interests included reading and crossword puzzles. Survivors include son Marc D. Bassewitz and daughter Lisa B. Lauber.
Barbara (or “Bobbi” as she was known to most everybody) was a longtime resident of Sheboygan. She and her husband relocated to Naples, Florida on a full-time basis in 1998 after a few years as “snow-birds.”
Barbara was predeceased by her spouse Paul P. Bassewitz in 2009.

Carolyn Emold
Carolyn (nee Sweet) Emold of Glendale died Nov. 29, 2019. She was 90.
Preceded in death by her beloved husband Harry Emold. Loving mother of Marcia (Gary) Rose and Anne (Steve) Recht. Fond sister of Janet Shafton. Cherished grandmother of Brett (Dr. Anna Zisman) Rose; Sari (Calvin) Rivera, Nick (Meg Recht); and great-grandmother of seven.

Lolita Friedlen
Lolita (nee Mittelman) Friedlen of Fox Point died Nov. 18, 2019. She was 93.
Dear mother of Robin (Brian) Ische and David (Karen) Friedlen. Loving grandmother of Sarah (Bryan) and Christopher Westling; Robby, Alex, Abby Friedlen; great-grandmother of Oscar and Sebastian. Harriet Miriam Goldstein
Harriet Miriam (nee Lebowsky) Goldstein of Los Angeles died Dec. 10, 2019. She was 90.
Harriet was born March 27, 1929 in Milwaukee and graduated from Washington High School in 1947.
Predeceased by her husband Russell, her sisters Florence Frank and Estelle Slavick, niece Barbara Solochek, and her parents Max and Irene Lebowsky. Survived by her sons Harvey (Lynn) Goldstein of Milwaukee and Perry (Tammy) Goldstein, her grandchildren Jordan (Elena) Goldstein of Milwaukee and Zachary and Aria Goldstein of Los Angeles, and her great grandson Alex Goldstein of Milwaukee and niece Robin Frank and nephews Randy (Ella) Frank and David (Cheryl) Solochek, nieces Janice Annesly and Barbara Weigel and nephews Kenneth and Jerry Goldstein. Interment at Mound Zion Cemetery. Donations to the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America.
Seema Gorens
Seema (nee Larkey) Gorens of Bayside died Dec. 8, 2019. She was 90.
Preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Sherwood W. Gorens. Loving mother of Nancy (Robert) Gorens-Edelman, Julie (Dr. James) Gorens-Winston, and Linda (Michael) Gorens-Levey. Dear Nana to Elyse, Sari; Danielle, Jennifer, and David; Jacob and Benjamin. Preceded in death by her brother, Dr. Jay Larkey, father of Cindy (Joel) Hershkowitz, Dr. Deborah (Jack Harris) Larkey, and the late Dr. Hirsh Larkey. Further survived by other relatives and friends. Pearl Nankin
Pearl Nankin of West Allis died Nov. 8, 2019. She was 91.
Wife of 69 years to Jack Nankin. Loving mother of Stuart (Maria Elena), Gail, Cheryl (John), Shawn, and Ruth. Adoring grandmother of Benjamin (Lisa), Adam, Andrew and Gabriella. Preceded in death by beloved brother, Earl. Also survived by sister-in-law, Lonna.
Pearl was passionate about her family, music, animals, and she will be dearly missed by her friends and family.

Miriam (Red) Orenstein
Miriam (Red) Orenstein of Milwaukee died Oct. 26, 2019. She was 93.
She was born June 18, 1926 in St. Louis.
Miriam was predeceased by Lawrence (Lazer) Orenstein in 2013.
She came to Wisconsin from St. Louis in 1947 and held many positions with organizations. She was affiliated with Na’amat, Labor Zionists of America and Habonim. She was an avid needle worker and enjoyed crosswords.
Survived by daughters Judith Dorfman, Marsha (Bruce) Loeb, Josh (friend Robin) Orenstein and 10 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.
Miriam enjoyed her life and all the activities at Chai Point and had many friends there. She loved planting the flowers in the spring and taking care of them in summer. Bingo, Rummikub and all the lectures and musical programs were of great interest to her.
Burial on Oct. 29, 2019 was at Beth Hamedrosh Hagodel with Rabbi Steve Adams and Blane Goodman Funeral Service.

Dolores Samosky Fruchtman
Dolores Samosky Fruchtman of Los Angeles, California died Oct. 15, 2019. She was 84.
Called Debbie, Debra, Doris and Dorsy by friends and family, finding her calling was a lifelong search. She was a first generation American who grew up in Milwaukee, surrounded by many loving, extended family members and friends. She attended Washington High School and Marquette University, became a medical technologist and later briefly worked as a real estate agent. She met and married her lifelong partner, Dr. Martin Z. Fruchtman in Milwaukee and raised a family in Waukesha. She loved to read, play tennis and bridge, swim, garden and attend the theater. She was very active in Congregation Emanu-El of Waukesha. She was open to new experiences and in her late 40s learned to snow ski and drive a motorcycle. In the early 2000s she permanently relocated to Leisure World in Laguna Woods, California where she participated in many activities, made good friends and enjoyed life very much. She did not find old age easy or welcoming. Predeceased in death by her husband. Survived by a daughter Gail (Glenn) Robins and grandson Evan.
Aaron Starobin
Aaron Starobin of San Diego died Nov. 11, 2019. He was 90.
Aaron was born Jan. 28, 1929 in Milwaukee, and he attended Washington High School, graduating in 1947. He graduated from University of Wisconsin – Madison and University of Wisconsin School of Law, 1951 and 1954, respectively.
He was a member of Congregation Shalom, serving as president 1976-1978. He was part of the Rotary Club of Thiensville. An attorney, he was with Starobin & Associates in Thiensville. He had an interest in politics, social justice and travel.
Aaron was a passionate advocate for human dignity and justice, a community leader and organizer and a warm, loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, son and friend. He enjoyed professional success and many accomplishments, but he was a humble man who derived his satisfaction from helping others. He leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter and joy.
Aaron lived his life passionately. He loved people and people loved him. He was a lifelong Green Bay Packers fan and an avid follower of current events. He had a brilliant, insightful mind and the ability to communicate through clear and colorful stories. Aaron was gifted in persuading and motivating people – whether it was a jury, his grandchildren or friends.
He is survived by spouse Caryl Weiss Starobin, plus daughters Loren (Dr. Ken) Ludmerer of St. Louis and Barrett (Alain) Avigdor of San Diego. Grandchildren, Jordan and Lindsey Ludmerer, Alexander and Harrison Avigdor.

Helen Weber of Milwaukee died Oct. 31, 2019. She was 92.
Preceded in death by her beloved husband Robert S. Weber. Loving mother of David (Sally) Weber and Lisa (William LeFurgy) Weber. Dear sister of Karl (Patricia Young) Usow.
