Madison’s Alpha Epsilon Pi continues ‘off campus’

Alpha Epsilon Pi, a Jewish-themed fraternity with a chapter for students at University of Wisconsin – Madison, is continuing to operate in the city despite its 2015 termination by school officials.

In recent years, the fraternity allegedly hosted events with underage drinking, according to the Wisconsin State Journal. There were also allegations of sexual harassment of a female employee of an event venue, according to the newspaper. The fraternity violated terms of suspension that were already in place and when problems continued it was kicked out of official campus life for at least two years, starting in May of 2015, according to reports.

Ilan Bagel, 19, the president of the chapter, says the group is strong and growing and today’s students are being punished for the actions of brothers who came before them. “They basically planned a formal (dance) when we were suspended,” he said.

The chapter doesn’t have a house but it does designate off-campus properties where brothers tend to live en masse.

“People who are Jewish are still coming here. Even though we’re off campus we still have a pretty big brotherhood,” Bagel said.

“It doesn’t really hurt the actual organization. Some sororities aren’t really able to host social events with us. They would get in trouble.”

“It’s just unfortunate because we’re not able to do everything that we would like to do.”
