Jewish Family Services brings new leadership aboard

Jewish Family Services has named John A. Yopps, former co-president of a multi-state health care treatment provider, its new president and chief executive officer.

Yopps will bring his experience in behavioral health care, business acumen and passion for client care to Jewish Family Services, according to a news release. He most recently served as co-president and chief compliance officer for Phoenix Care Systems, a large multi-state provider serving individuals with complex development, mental health, behavioral and social needs through quality care, effective treatment and supportive services.

The appointment is effective April 18, 2016, made after a nationwide search, according to the release.

Jewish Family Services is a social services agency that seeks to preserve, strengthen and enhance the well-being and self-sufficiency of children, adults, and families throughout the Milwaukee community through professional counseling, programs and services inspired by Jewish values. The agency has also created a housing affiliate that provides affordable housing for low and moderate-income individuals, families, seniors and people with disabilities.

"Our community’s need for the life-saving services JFS provides has never been greater," said the agency’s board chair, Bonnie Bockl Joseph.  "Government funding and private gifts and grants are being stretched to the limit, so we must work hard to be efficient and caring at the same time. John brings a caring heart and strong business and organizational skills at a critical time in our history.”

“We are excited about bringing an experienced executive who has served in both the private sector and the non-profit world of social services to lead JFS in its mission of strengthening children and families,” said Steve Zimmerman, chairman of a transition committee with the agency.

In his role with Phoenix Care Systems, Yopps was responsible for company operations, program and service development, and agency performance. He holds a bachelor of science degree in social welfare from the University of Wisconsin — Milwaukee and a master’s of business management, disability services degree from the University of San Francisco.

“I am honored to have been chosen to lead Jewish Family Services, an agency that for nearly 150 years has played such a life-altering role for individuals and families in our community and will continue to do so for generations to come,” said Yopps.  “I look forward to working with the Board, staff, dedicated volunteers and community partners, and to using my expertise and experience for the greater good.  These are challenging times, but I’m confident that together we can continue to deepen and broaden the impact of this incredible organization.”
