Holocaust Book Club

A Holocaust Book Club event will focus on the book, “Holocaust Representations in History:
An Introduction,” by Daniel Magilow and Lisa Silverman. 7 p.m. at the Harry & Rose Samson Family Jewish Community Center, 6255 N Santa Monica Blvd., Whitefish Bay. Join the authors as they discuss their most recent publication.  In a series of chronologically presented case studies, the book introduces the major themes and issues of Holocaust representation across a variety of media and genres, including film, drama, literature, photography, visual art, television, graphic novels, and memorials.  The case studies presented not only include well-known, commercially successful, and canonical works about the Holocaust, such as the film Shoah and Elie Wiesel’s memoir Night, but also controversial examples that have drawn accusations of profaning the memory of the genocide.  Each work’s specific historical and cultural significance is then discussed to provide further insight into the impact of one of the most devastating events of the 20th century and the continued relevance of its memory. Co-sponsors: Nathan and Esther Pelz Holocaust Education Resource Center of the Milwaukee Jewish Federation; UW-Milwaukee Sam and Helen Stahl Center for Jewish Studies; and Harry & Rose Samson Family JCC.

Free artist lecture

Israeli artist Adi Nes will present the free lecture, “Photography, Identity and Life on the Fringe” on Wednesday, Nov. 4 at 7 p.m. in the atrium of the Evan & Marion Helfaer Community Services Building, 1360 N. Prospect Ave.

One of Israel’s most prominent photographers, Adi Nes’ works have been presented in numerous exhibitions worldwide. His multi-layered photographs, which correspond with famous pieces from the art canon as well as with contemporary sources, create a new and critical look at contemporary reality by diverting borrowed images towards new contexts. The son of Jewish parents who emigrated from Iran in the 1950s, Nes’ art gives expression to his multi-layered identity:  homosexual, Jewish, Israeli, Iranian and one who grew up on the periphery of Israeli society.  Event Sponsors include J-Pride, the LGBT inclusion initiative of the Milwaukee Jewish Federation; the Israel Center and Jewish Museum Milwaukee, both programs of the Milwaukee Jewish Federation and the Haggerty Museum of Art at Marquette University;
