Schools adopt policy for religious accommodation

The Madison School Board on May 18 approved recommended changes in the Madison Metropolitan School District’s policies on religious accommodation, and the policies went into effect July 1, according to the August issue of the Madison Jewish News.

The article further states that Dina Weinbach, executive director of the Jewish Federation of Madison, worked on a special committee with members of the district and people from different faith communities to develop and recommend the changes.

The policy “names specific religious ‘observances’ as likely to ‘impact attendance,’ and directs that tests, field trips, sports events and similar activities should not conflict with those observances,” the article states.

“For other occasions, it provides privacy for students requesting accommodation, plus a complaint process in case a student or family finds a proposed accommodation unsatisfactory,” the article states.
