Sarah Chudnow Community to focus on art and music

Programs at the Sarah Chudnow Community in Mequon for July will focus primarily on art and music.

The Summer Concert Series continues on Wednesday, July 1, 7 p.m., with Frogwater. The group performs a mix of Celtic, American, old-time, bluegrass, Cajun and blues music.

On Wednesday, July 29, 7 p.m., Iberian Spanish Dancers share the rich traditions of dance, music and culture of the Ibero-Hispanic experience through classical and folkloric Flamenco styles. The Summer Concert series is sponsored by the Gilbert Meisel Music Fund of the Jewish Home and Care Center Foundation.

Rhonda Pelk, docent at Milwaukee Art Museum, presents a program on MAM’s recent exhibit “Inspiring Beauty: 50 Years of Ebony Fashion Fair” on Thursday, July 9, at 1:30 p.m.. This is the kick-off presentation for SCC’s new series, “The Workings of the Apparel and Fashion Industry: Past and Present.” Programs will be presented by staff member Judy Pendel.

Delores Wrathel and Shelly Stoffel are the featured artists for SCC’s Artist-In-Residence Series. The exhibition opens on Sunday, July 12, 2 p.m. in the Second Floor Art Gallery, with a reception immediately following in Posner Town Square.

On Thursday, July 30, 1:30 p.m., Pelk returns to discuss the current exhibit “Van Gogh to Pollock: Modern Rebels.” The exhibition aims to bring focus to those artists — including Mark Chagall, Pablo Picasso and Georgia O’Keefe — whose acts of creative rebellion shaped the course of modern art. “Modern Rebels” is on display through Sept. 20.

To complement its special programming, Sarah Chudnow community also offers recurrent monthly programs.

On Wednesdays, July 1, July 15, and July 29, 10:30 a.m., attorney Lori Kornblum, adjunct professor at Marquette University Law School and former assistant district attorney for Milwaukee County, offers legal perspective to some controversial topics.

Lisa Gorelick, RN, BS, presents “Healthy Living” on Friday, July 10, 11:15 a.m., and Saturday, July 25, 2:30 p.m. If planning on attending, please refrain from wearing fragrances.

These events are in addition to regularly scheduled activities at SCC. Find more activities and musical events on the activity calendar at SarahChudnow.org or by calling 262-478-1500.
