Three Wisconsin rabbis were among the 342 who as of June 8 signed a rabbinical letter calling for action to prevent worsening of human-caused climate change and to seek ecological and social justice.
The letter was initiated by seven leading rabbis from U.S. Jewish life, including Milwaukee native Rabbi Elliot Dorff, author and rector of the American Jewish University.
According to a June 8 news release from the Philadelphia-based Shalom Center, the letter was “inspired by the climate crisis, the Torah’s call for a “Sabbatical Year” of releasing the earth from overwork and the impending papal encyclical on the climate crisis.”
The three Wisconsin signers to date are Rabbi Tiferet Berenbaum of Congregation Shir Hadash, Rabbi Marc Berkson of Congregation Emanu-El B’ne Jeshurun, both of Milwaukee, and Rabbi Jonathan Biatch of Temple Beth El in Madison.
