Chai Point July events include art, music focus

   The Milwaukee Art Museum, Wisconsin Conservatory of Music and Portrait Society Gallery are among the presenters for July programming at Chai Point Senior Living.

   Debra Brehmer, gallery director of Portrait Society Gallery, presents “The Life and Art of Mary Nohl” on Wednesday, July 8, 3 p.m.Nohl (1914-2001) created huge concrete heads, stone-encrusted creatures, and imposing driftwood figures in the yard of her cottage on the shores of Lake Michigan.

   Singer, songwriter, story-teller and world traveler Seth Hoffman returns to Chai Point for his annual performance on Monday, July 13, 6:45 p.m.

   Milwaukee Journal Sentinel columnist Alan Borsuk presents “Behind the Headlines” on Tuesday, July 14, 3 p.m. Borsuk is also a senior fellow in law and public policy at Marquette University Law School.

   Howard Tolkan, Milwaukee attorney and music aficionado, guest lectures on Tuesday, July 21, 3 p.m. He will discuss “Porgy & Bess,” the English-language opera composed by George Gershwin.

   On Wednesday, July 22, 3 p.m., Suzi Hanks, docent educator at the Milwaukee Art Museum, will discuss the current exhibit “Van Gogh to Pollock: Modern Rebels.”

   On Thursday, July 23, 1:30 p.m., author Avi Lank discusses his new book, “The Man Who Painted the Universe: The Story of a Planetarium in the Heart of the North Woods,” and his life as a journalist. Lank is an essayist for Milwaukee Public Radio and panelist on the “Interchange” a public-affairs program on Milwaukee Public Television.

   On Wednesday, July 29, 3:30 p.m., Dr. Paul Jacobs presents “Baseball Ballpark Memories.” Jacobs was the team physician for the Milwaukee Brewers for 25 years and later served as medical director of the Sports Medicine Institute of Sinai Samaritan Medical Center. This presentation is in conjunction with Jewish Museum Milwaukee’s exhibit, “Chasing Dreams: Baseball & Becoming American,” which is on display through Sept. 7.

   Curtis Stotlar, classical pianist, performs as part of a series with the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music on Friday, July 31, 1:30 p.m. This concert series, featuring professional musicians who are also instructors at the conservatory, was created for Chai Point residents and their guests. The program will run monthly through September.
