Congregation Sinai received a 2015 Irving J. Fain Social Action Award at the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism’s Consultation on Conscience, held in Washington, D.C. April 26-28.
The award is given by the Commission on Social Action of Reform Judaism (CSA). It honored the initiative of Sinai’s social action committee called “MIKLAT-Spaces of Refuge.” This was designed to educate the congregants about issues facing undocumented migrants, and led to the synagogue’s joining the New Sanctuary Movement network.
Congregation Sinai social action committee member and New Sanctuary Movement participant Rachel Buff accepted the award on the committee’s behalf at the conference.
Buff and Congregation Sinai’s Rabbi David Cohen, with committee members and conference attendees Edith Gilman and Diane Slomowitz, were scheduled to share and discuss the committee’s initiative at the conference’s breakout sessions.
