Groups to collect and recycle electronics

Lake Park Synagogue in conjunction with Tikkun Ha-Ir of Milwaukee and J-WISE (the Jewish-Wisconsin Initiative for a Sustainable Environment) will be collecting old, unwanted electronics for safe recycling on Sunday, March 22.

According to Prof. Daniel Weber, an environmental scientist at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and an organizer of the project, “One of the biggest sources of contamination today is the dumping of electronic devices (cell phones, computer systems, etc.). These are made of metals and organic chemicals that pollute ground water and can be serious health hazards to people and wildlife.

In recent years, growing concern for the environmental effects of these materials has led some non-profit groups to organize electronic waste recycling drives, often on Saturdays, the Jewish Sabbath.

By scheduling a collection on a Sunday, these groups will accommodate Jews cleaning out their homes for Passover, while inviting everyone throughout the community to bring old, broken, or unwanted electronics.

Lake Park Synagogue is located at 3207 N. Hackett Ave. in Milwaukee; the pickup site is the synagogue’s driveway, which faces Hampshire Ave.
