Rabbi opines on bus referendum

Rabbi E. Daniel Danson of Mount Sinai Congregation in Wausau wrote an opinion article published in the Oct. 19 Wausau Daily Herald about a local referendum.

At issue was the raising of property taxes to continue bus service to the communities of Weston, Schofield and Rothschild — called the “K route” or “K line.” These communities are parts of Wausau’s south metro area.

The synagogue’s November bulletin reprinted the article. “The K line is a religious issue because all our faith traditions speak of human dignity and the need to be concerned about each other, especially those of us who are disabled, don’t have big incomes or are growing old,” Danson wrote.

“Public transit is integral to the dignity and independence of many of our fellow citizens,” he wrote.

The village of Weston held a referendum on this issue on Nov. 4. According to the Wausau Daily Herald website, Weston voters said no, 2,985 to 2,436.
