The Harry & Rose Samson Family JCC will be offering free film classes in November.
On Sunday, Nov. 2, 4 p.m., the “Jews Around the World” series will view the French dramatic film “For a Woman” (“Pour une femme”) (2013) with Dr. Amy Shapiro leading the discussion.
After her mother’s death, Anne (the protagonist) discovers a photograph of her mother with an unknown man. She uncovers the great love affair of her mother’s life, a post-war triangle involving Holocaust survivors.
The program is co-sponsored by the Nathan and Esther Peltz Holocaust Education Resource Center.
On Sunday, Nov. 9, 4 p.m., the JCC is launching a new series called “Singular Sensations: Great Jewish Stars of Broadway.” It highlights four films followed by discussion with experts providing insights into some of Broadway’s greats — and whether their Jewish heritage may have contributed to their achievements.
The first film in this series is “Broadway Musicals: A Jewish Legacy” (2012). This documentary examines the unique role of Jewish composers and lyricists in the creation of the modern American musical.
It includes interviews with Harold Prince, Sheldon Harnick, Steven Schwarz and Stephen Sondheim, as well as clips of performances. Commentary and discussion will be led by Merzy and Russ Eisenberg.
The “Cutting Edge Israel” free film classes will continue on Thursday, Nov. 13, 7:30 p.m., with a musical documentary, “Iraq N Roll” (2011).
Israeli rock musician Dudu Tassa takes on the Iraqi music of his grandfather — a leading musician in early 20th century Iraq — in an attempt to bridge the past and present. Amit Yaniv-Zehavi, Israel emissary to Milwaukee, will lead discussion.
In “Saga of a Photo” (2013) — shown Thursday, Dec. 4, 7:30 p.m. — Israeli filmmaker Mooli Landesman discovers a photograph of his grandparents’ wedding. The photo sets off a chain of events and highlights a love story involving one of the founders of the Habimah theater. The instructor will be Jody Hirsh.
Beginning Monday, Nov. 24, 7 p.m., the JCC will present the award-winning new Israeli hit TV drama “Shtisel” — the first to focus on Haredi Jews in Israel.
The series focuses on the life issues of the extended Shtisel family of Mea Sharim. The series will be introduced by Yaniv-Zehavi. It will continue Monday nights Dec. 1, 8 and 15 at 7 p.m.
