Pianist Nonken to be
honored for service
to contemporary music

Milwaukee-native pianist and music professor Marilyn Nonken will receive the 2014 Nouveau Classical Project Visionary Award at the organization’s annual benefit on Oct. 8.

Nonken is associate professor of music and music education at New York University. She has performed and recorded much contemporary music. Her   book “The Spectral Piano: From Liszt, Scriabin and Debussy to the Digital Age” was published this year by Cambridge University Press.

The Nouveau Classical Project describes itself on its website as “a hybrid music ensemble and creative production hub” that seeks to “reimagine the concert experience in modern and dynamic ways through adventurous project, new repertoire and collaboration with fashion designers, dancers, composers and more.”

It was founded by one of Nonken’s students, pianist Sugar Vendil, in 2013.
