MJF, Spertus to partner in graduate program

The Milwaukee Jewish Federation and the Chicago-based Spertus Institute for Jewish Learning and Leadership will bring an educational opportunity to people working for Milwaukee’s Jewish agencies and organizations.

The institute’s Master of Arts in Jewish Professional Studies program is a two-year-long, part-time graduate program designed to advance the business expertise and Jewish knowledge of professionals working in the Jewish community.

Classes are scheduled to begin in February. The deadline for priority consideration is Nov. 3.

The program combines grounding in classical and contemporary Jewish thought with professional training in areas of nonprofit management and education that most affect Jewish communal work.

A mentoring component affords students the opportunity to learn from leaders in their field, with mentors helping students apply the material taught in the classroom to organizational life.

Created in 2007, the MAJPSprogram has expanded beyond the Chicago area to include Canada, Israel and Pittsburgh as well as Milwaukee.

The idea for bringing the MAJPS program to Milwaukee came from conversations between Spertus Institute senior staff and leaders at the MJF and its education department, the Coalition for Jewish Learning.

This partnership builds on other ties between Spertus and the Milwaukee area, including the participation of several masters and doctoral students from Milwaukee in the institute’s Jewish studies degree programs and collaborations between Spertus and the Jewish Museum Milwaukee, a program of the MJF.

With the support of an outside donor, the institute can to provide partial scholarships — called Midcareer Fellowships — to qualified students who are employed at a Jewish organization a minimum of 15 hours per week.

Those interested in applying should contact Dr. Dean Bell, Spertus provost and vice president, at 312-322-1791 or dbell@spertus.edu.
