Jason Been

          Milwaukee native Jason Been of Las Vegas died June 5 of brain cancer. He was 40.

          He graduated from Nicolet High School in 1992 and the University of Nevada-Las Vegas in 1997. According to his family, he was manager of the race and sports department of the Golden Nugget in Las Vegas.

          His family has said that sports were “his greatest passion” and the he “was known as the sports encyclopedia and was blessed to have a career in the field he loved.”

          His family further stated that he belonged to Las Vegas Sports Consultants and was a guest speaker at UNLV.

          He is survived by parents Diane and Joel Been; sister Jodi (Danny) Isaacson; and grandmother Beatrice Wagan.

          Blane Goodman Funeral Service handled arrangements. Rabbi Ronald Shapiro officiated at the funeral at Congregation Shalom on June 10. Burial was in Mound Zion Cemetery.

          The family suggests memorial contributions to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, the Make-A-Wish Foundation or the Hodan Center.

 
Dr. Marvin J. Bines

          Milwaukee optometrist Dr. Marvin J. Bines died on June 28. He was 91.

          He was a Milwaukee native who graduated from North Division High School and the Northern Illinois College of Optometry. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II; the Wisconsin Jewish Chronicle of Dec. 22, 1944, noted that he was commissioned as a second lieutenant.

          He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Bedane Bines (nee Davidson); sons Dr. Steven (Ann) Bines and Dr. Lawrence (Robert Chao) Bines; brother Martin Bines; and three grandchildren.

          Suminski/Weiss Funeral Home handled arrangements. Per his request, no formal funeral service was held.

          The family suggests memorial contributions to the charity of the donor’s choice.

 
Dr. Sheldon Dorf

          Dentist Dr. Sheldon Dorf of Fox Point died July 2 of a heart attack. He was 76.

          He was a Milwaukee native who earned his dental degree from Marquette University in 1962. He had a private practice.

          He was a member of the brotherhood of Congregation Emanu-El B’ne Jeshurun and a member of the Alpha Omega dental fraternity. He enjoyed photography, music, art, golf and baseball.

          His is survived by wife Phyllis Dorf (nee Brenes); daughter Barbara (Michael) Levin; sons Mitchell (Lynda) Dorf and Gregory (Dana) Dorf; brothers Jerry (Harriet) Dorf and Stan (Sue) Dorf; and seven grandchildren.

          Blane Goodman Funeral Service handled arrangements. Rabbi Marc Berkson officiated at the funeral on July 4. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery.

          The family suggests memorial contributions to Congregation Emanu-El B’ne Jeshurun.

 
Richard David Silberman

          Native Milwaukeean Richard David Silberman of Berkeley, Calif., died on June 15. He was 76.

          He and his family lived on Milwaukee’s west side, and he celebrated his bar mitzvah at Beth El Ner Tamid Synagogue. After the family moved to Whitefish Bay, he was active in BBYO and helped start the first east side chapters of the organization, according to his family.

          He graduated from Whitefish Bay High School. He earned undergraduate and LL.B. degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and a J.D. degree from the Stanford University Law School.

          In Milwaukee, he was an associate with the law firm Whyte, Hirschboeck, Minahan, Harding and Harland. After moving to the San Francisco Bay Area, he worked as corporate counsel for Hale Brothers Associates.

          He finished his legal career in private practice in San Francisco. He helped to found Parnassus Funds, serving as counsel and corporate secretary for 30 years, until his death.

          According to his family, his “love of learning and education” led to service on several private school boards, including Seven Hills in Walnut Creek and Windrush School in El Cerrito.

          His family wrote that he enjoyed music — he sang in the Nigunim Community Chorus in Berkeley — skiing, hiking, traveling and gardening, and that “his cheerful enjoyment of life was contagious.”

          He is survived by daughters Linda Sweet of Denver, Beth (Eyal) Zilberman and Hannah Silberman, both of Boston; son Jeffrey (Rachel) Silberman of San Carlos, Calif.; sister Leslie Kalinsky of Aptos, Calif.; former wives Sandy Pyer (mother of Jeffrey and Linda) and Dede Meyer (mother of Beth and Hannah), both of Berkeley; and five grandchildren.

          A celebration of his life/memorial service was held July 6 at the Jewish Community Center of the East Bay in Berkeley.

          Memorial contributions may be made Friends of Mt. Tam, Berkeley Wanderers Association, Road Scholar, East Bay Regional Parks Foundation, Cazadero Music Camp or the Oregon Shakespeare Festival.
