Milwaukeean and former U.S. Senator from Wisconsin Herb Kohl received an honorary Doctor of Public Service and Education Degree from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee at the school’s May 18 spring commencement, according to the June 2014 UWM Report.
Kohl served in the Senate from 1989-2013. He is also a businessman, philanthropist and from 1985 until this year, the owner of the Milwaukee Bucks basketball team.
The UWM Report particularly noted that Kohl in 1990 founded the Herb Kohl Educational Foundation. This organization annually awards $1,000 scholarships to about 200 graduating high school seniors. It also awards fellowships to teachers and schools.
