Victor Mirelman of the Spertus Institute in Chicago will give two presentations in Milwaukee about Sephardic (Spanish) Jews and Jews who had to hide their Jewish identities.
He will discuss “Sephardim and Crypto-Jews after the Expulsion” — i.e., the expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492 — on Tuesday, May 20, 7 p.m., at Congregation Emanu-El B’ne Jeshurun, 2020 W. Brown Deer Rd. Admission is free. RSVP requested to 414-228-7545 or info@ceebj.org.
Mirelman’s second presentation will be about “Marranos in the Americas: The Crypto-Jewish Presence in the New World,” on Wednesday, May 21, 11:30 a.m., in a “lunch and learn” program at the Jewish Museum Milwaukee, 1360 N. Prospect Ave.

Born and raised in Argentina, Mirelman received a rabbinical degree from the Jewish Theological Seminary and a Ph.D. from Columbia University. After teaching at The Hebrew University in Jerusalem, he led congregations in New Jersey and Illinois. He has taught at Spertus for 25 years.
