UWM exhibit opens

In 2003 and 2004, Helene Fischman set up studios in former Nazi concentration camps. An exhibit of a selection from the resulting series of her photographs and paintings, titled “Art from the Ashes: Finding Light in the Shadow of the Shoah,” opened Feb. 19 at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Golda Meir Library, and will run through May 30. Above, Fischman poses with Joel Berkowitz, director of UWM’s Sam and Helen Stahl Center for Jewish Studies, at the opening, which about 60 people attended. The CJS mounted this exhibit in partnership with UWM Libraries and Special Collections. Photo provided by Karen Dredge.
