Jewish Family Services of Milwaukee will present Jackson Katz, Ph.D., — educator, author, and lecturer — speaking on “Tough Guise: Violence, Media, and the Crisis in Masculinity.”
He will speak at the Italian Conference Center, 631 E. Chicago St., on Wednesday, May 1. A continental breakfast and registration will begin at 8 a.m., followed by Katz’s presentation, at 8:30 a.m.
He will be available for a book signing after the program. The event is free and open to the public.
In his presentation, Katz will use clips from his film, “Tough Guise,” to illustrate how mainstream entertainment media images from sports, television, Hollywood film, and music videos help to promote violent masculinity as a cultural norm.
Katz is a pioneer in the fields of gender violence prevention education and critical media literacy. He is cofounder of Mentors in Violence Prevention, one of the most widely utilized sexual and domestic violence prevention initiatives in college and professional athletics in North America.
Katz is author of “The Macho Paradox” and “Leading Men: Presidential Campaigns and the Politics of Manhood.” He has appeared on numerous radio and television programs in the U.S., Canada, Europe, and Australia.
