JCC offers free film classes in March

The Harry & Rose Samson Family Jewish Community Center will be offering the following free film classes in early March, both in honor of International Women’s Month.

On Sunday, March 3, 4 p.m., the “Jews Around the World” series will view the Argentinian film “Camera Obscura (La Camara Oscura)” (2008), in conjunction with the Women and Gender Studies Department of Alverno College.

This drama set in early 20th century Argentina follows Gertrudis, a self-conscious, unattractive woman who is married off to a wealthy Jewish widower. After meeting a gentle French photographer, Gertrudis learns to truly see herself.

Discussion will be led by Dr. Amy Shapiro and Marina Maller Huck. The film is in Spanish with subtitles.

On Thursday, March 7, as part of the ”Cutting Edge Israel” series, the JCC will be screening “The 5 Houses of Lea Goldberg” about one of Israel’s most beloved poets, an accomplished woman who never married. The film is in Hebrew with subtitles.

Emissary from Israel Michal Makov-Peled will lead the discussion following this film, which is co-sponsored by the JCC, the Israel Center of the Milwaukee Jewish Federation, and the Women and Gender Studies Department of Alverno College.

All film classes will take place in the Community Hall. For further information, contact Laurie Herman, lherman@jccmilwaukee.org or 414-964-8212.
