The Milwaukee Jewish community commemoration of 74th anniversary of Kristallnacht is scheduled to take place on Sunday, Nov. 4, at 3:30 p.m.
The commemoration will begin with a remembrance ceremony at the outdoor Memorial to the Holocaust located at 1360 N. Prospect Ave.
Clergy representing different faith communities in the area will lead participants to the Rubenstein Pavilion in the Jewish Home and Care Center, 1414 N. Prospect Ave. An interfaith candle lighting, commemoration service and program will take place.
Holocaust survivor Werner Richheimer and child of survivors Betsy Maier Reilly will speak. Individuals from all religious backgrounds are invited.
Kristallnacht, also known as the “Night of Broken Glass,” was the Nazi-orchestrated anti-Jewish riot that occurred Nov. 9-10, 1938, throughout Germany and Austria. It was a pivotal event in the escalating violence toward the Jews that culminated in the Holocaust.
Co-chairs of the 2012 commemoration are Tim Crain, Ph.D., of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and Sandy Hoffman.
The Nathan and Esther Pelz Holocaust Education Resource Center is hosting the event, which is co-sponsored by the Jewish Museum Milwaukee and the Jewish Home and Care Center.
