Letter: Bronfman’s view is far from reality

When I read Edgar Bronfman’s opinion on President Obama’s position on Israel in the September Chronicle, I thought it was as far from reality as could be. My main concern regarding Obama is that his radical background would be detrimental to Israel’s security.

The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Martin Dempsey on Aug. 30 in London told Israel that if she strikes Iran then she is on her own. The number of U.S. troops in joint exercises slated for the end of October has been drastically reduced. Patriot missiles to defend Israel from missile strikes lie in crates, but the U.S. crews that were supposed to operate them have not been sent, say several news reports.

I read news reports of Egypt negotiating with Bedouin to grant a body of 6,000 Al-Qaeda-linked Salafi gunmen the status of an approved, independent militia (Debkafile, Sept. 3), and Obama has decided to hold joint military exercises with Egypt (Arutz Sheva, Sept. 5).

The list grows longer. This is leaving Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu with the dilemma of when to strike Iran because of lack of trust in the U.S.

The Jewish electorate has to wake up and realize what is happening to America’s relationship with Israel.

This is the opposite of the way President Nixon saved Israel during the 1973 Yom Kippur War. I know because I was there.
