Freund among ship survivors honored at State Department

Philip S. Freund of Menomonee Falls was one of the survivors of the SS St. Louis slated to be honored at the U.S. State Department on Sept. 24.

The event was hosted by the SS St. Louis Legacy Project in association with the State Dept.

The SS St. Louis was a German ship that was carrying 937 German Jews trying to flee Nazi Germany in 1939. They were denied entry to Cuba, the United States, and Canada, and were finally accepted in various countries of Europe. Nearly a third of the passengers ultimately died in the Holocaust.
