On July 16, the Coalition for Jewish Learning (CJL), the education program of the Milwaukee Jewish Federation, and the Nathan and Esther Pelz Holocaust Education Resource Center (HERC) got new homes.
They moved from their previous location at the Harry & Rose Samson Family Jewish Community Center at the Karl Jewish Community Campus to offices in the Helfaer Community Service Building, 1360 N. Prospect Ave.
The move came as a result of the Reimagining process that the Milwaukee Jewish Federation has been undergoing for more than a year.
In an effort to sharpen its focus, CJL will concentrate on the programs most vital to Milwaukee’s Jewish education community, including the Congregational School Initiative, in which CJL partners with area synagogue-related schools.
Along with its new strategic focus, CJL will work more closely with the MJF, and the move to Prospect Avenue will support this collaboration.
Through the moving process, CJL staff found they had a tremendous number of books and learning resources in their possession.
“It was difficult to decide what should stay in our in-house library, and what should go, and we were happy to see so many books and tapes sent to local educational facilities and synagogues,” said Steve Baruch, CJL’s executive director.
The staff members at CJL and HERC believe residing in the Helfaer Community Service Building is a positive change for their organization.
“We feel that being in the Helfaer building opens up new opportunities for collaborative work, especially with the Jewish Museum Milwaukee and the Jewish Community Relations Council, and we are excited to see what can be done together,” said Bonnie Shafrin, HERC’s executive director.
Though their location has changed, as the staff members of both CJL and HERC organize and settle into their new office space, their goal remains the same. “We look forward to continuing to work with local agencies and continuing our mission of education,” said Baruch.
