I found Martha Pincus’ remarks about Republicans in the June issue of the Wisconsin Jewish Chronicle regarding the Jewish stake in the Wisconsin recall election to be intolerant, personal, and pejorative. These stood in contrast to the topical and thoughtful comments of Mark Laufman.
Pincus squandered her opportunity to be thoughtful, and lashed out at her political opponents, calling Republicans “haters,” “prejudiced against Jews,” “anti-poor people, anti-disabled people, anti-women, anti-students, anti-union.” How offensive!
I am proud to be a Jewish Republican, and an unapologetic supporter of Gov. Scott Walker. My views are not anti-Jewish or anti-anyone.
Furthermore, I will not concede the mitzvah of tikkun olam (repair of the world) to progressives, liberals, or the Democratic Party. I have volunteered years of service to the Milwaukee Jewish Federation, Milwaukee Jewish Family Services, Big Brother Big Sisters of Greater Milwaukee, and Keshet of Wisconsin.
I am a contributor to the MJF, JFS, Poriyah Government Hospital, Israel Bonds, and many other organizations. I have devoted an entire career in one of the lowest paying medical specialties to the primary care of working women and men on Milwaukee’s south and west sides. I have raised a disabled child.
Therefore, Pincus’ comments were extremely offensive to me and to the majority of conservatives who are doing their best to live righteous lives.
The debate should be about issues, and how Judaism influences our views and choices. Without getting into details of what separates liberals from conservatives, I am perfectly comfortable with the general views of my party: equal opportunity under law (without guarantee of equal result), limited government, fiscal conservatism, low taxes, strong defense, protections against voter fraud, opposition to unionist crony corruption, absolute support for the State of Israel, and protection for the soon to be born.
I think these are righteous positions, good for our country, and consistent with traditional Jewish values.
On June 5, I voted for Walker and Lieutenant Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch; others in my family did not. Maybe people can learn from our example; we all love each other just the same.
