Author, LGBT activist to speak at bookstore

Catherine Tuerk, author of “Mom Knows: Reflections on Love, Gay Pride, and Taking Action,” will speak on Thursday, June 21, 7 p.m., at the Boswell Book Company, 2559 N. Downer Ave.

Tuerk is a psychotherapist in private practice, an activist in the Washington, D.C., Jewish community with her husband Jonathan Tuerk, and the mother of a gay son.

She was president of the Metro D.C. chapter of Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays. More recently she has been a leader, nationally and internationally, in recognizing and supporting the needs of gender-nonconforming children and their parents.

The book, scheduled for publication this month, contains selections of some 20 years of her writings on these topics, plus a forward by Rabbi David M. Horowitz, national president of PFLAG.
