Six Milwaukee-area Holocaust survivors, with the help of some of their descendants, on April 22 lit six candles to remember the six million Jews murdered by the German Nazis. The event was Milwaukee’s Yom HaShoah commemoration, a “Memorial to the Six Million, Remembrance of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising and All Resistance,” at the Harry & Rose Samson Family Jewish Community Center. In addition, winners of the student Holocaust essay contest sponsored by the Habush Family Foundation were recognized — Theresa Smiley, Matt Swenson, Rachel Denk, and Jonathan Yankee — and survivor Ralph Rehbock, vice president of the Holocaust Memorial Foundation of Illinois, was the keynote speaker. About 400 people attended. Photo by Leon Cohen.
