Medieval Jewish philosophy influences to this day how people understand what Judaism says about many theological and practical issues.
Congregation Anshe Sfard Kehillat Torah and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee’s Sam and Helen Stahl Center for Jewish Studies will be sponsoring a scholar-in-residence specializing in this field.
During May 12-14, Steven Harvey, Ph.D., a professor in the Department of Philosophy at Bar Ilan University in Tel Aviv, Israel, will be delivering three lectures on topics in medieval Jewish philosophy.
His first two will be held at Anshe Sfard Kehillat Torah, 6717 N. Green Bay Ave. The third will be given at the Center for Jewish Studies, 3367 N. Downer Ave. Admission is free. Topics and times will be:
• “For Whom did Maimonides Really Write the ‘Guide for the Perplexed’?” 10:30 a.m. at ASKT.
• “The Introductions of Medieval Jewish Thinkers as a Key to Understanding Their Works.” 6:30 p.m. at ASKT.
• “The Influence of Medieval Islamic Philosophy on Jewish Thinkers.” Noon at UWM. This lecture is co-sponsored by UWM’s departments of history and philosophy; its Arabic, Middle East, North Africa certificate program; and its religious studies program.
