MPTV to air show on Yiddish theater stars

Milwaukee Public Television on Thursday, March 29, 8 p.m., will broadcast on Channel 36 a “Great Performances” series program called “The Thomashefskys: Music and Memories of a Life in the Yiddish Theater.”

The show celebrates the careers of Yiddish theater pioneers Boris and Bessie Thomashefsky. It was written, and the program will be hosted, by the Thomashefskys’ grandson Michael Tilson Thomas, music director of the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra and artistic director of the New World Symphony.

The show features actors portraying the Thomashefskys, plus music reconstructed from the original Yiddish theater repertoire interwoven with projected images and stories from the Thomashefskys’ memoirs.

The show will be released on DVD on April 24 by New Video.
