Letter: Article about Winehouse was wrong and clichéd

I am revolted by The Chronicle’s decision to print “Mourning Amy Winehouse going ‘Back to Black’” in the August issue.

Dvora Meyers not only lists infamous White House intern Monica Lewinsky among esteemed women of the Torah, but she dubs them all “biblical vixens.”

Dina was kidnapped and raped by Shechem (Genesis 33:18-34:31). She wasn’t trying to “sleep with him” as Meyers writes.

Deborah was a prophetess, judge, military strategist, and “mother in Israel.” “Biblical heroine?” Yes. “Biblical vixen?” Hardly.

I would also like to add that “nice” Jewish women are not synonymous with such clichés as concocting chicken soup or bragging about children. A “nice” Jewish woman can be both modest and attractive, refined and fiercely bold, talented in the office and in the kitchen.

Meyers may choose to wear pants, and I respect her religious freedom. I, however, will continue to wear skirts, and they won’t stop me from kicking butt.
