Cory A. Booker — the mayor of Newark, N.J., former co-president of the Oxford University L’Chaim Society, and a potentially rising national politician — was the featured speaker at the Hillel Academy 50th anniversary celebration on Aug. 14. In addition, Hillel Principal B. Dvorah Shmotkin announced to the some 500 people attending that the Helen and Bernard Soref Fund pledged $1 million to match a challenge grant from Alfred Bader to help begin to build a $5 million endowment for the school.
